The Riverside Retreat

This beautiful woodland garden has been designed and constructed by landscape architects, Austen Associates, under the direction of award winning, Principal Landscape Architect and Garden Designer, Tim Austen. Tim’s team have based the design of the garden on his gold medal winning large show garden from Bloom 2008. Using the same design principles and themes that earned his garden the accolade of “Visitor’s Choice” at the show, including the natural, “river-like” water feature, charming bridge, naturalistic planting style and centrally placed summer-house, the garden captivates the visitor; its simple charm lying in its uncomplicated layout and in its ability to invoke a feeling of calm. This is also specifically provided for both by the movement and noise of the water as it tumbles over the weir. The ornamental summerhouse situated to the end of the garden provides a destination point and also a place from which the water weir and bridge can be fully appreciated! The garden uses natural Wicklow granite stone to form the water feature, the paving areas and edging detail and the mossy stones reinforce the natural feel of the garden. Special trees included in the garden include a multistemmed Acer rufinerve, Quercus palustris and a large Cornus controversa. Ground cover plants include Hellebores, Hosta, Primula and Rodgersia and a variety of Ferns. Please take your time to move through the garden along the soft gravel paths, take in the planting and enjoy all this riverside retreat has to offer!
