The idea of the wall, with its double headed dragon, was to provide an arresting end to the Harlequin Walk.
The wall can be seen from the shop at the far end. The raised pond is an ornamental feature in its own right and a functional one too as the broad coping makes a useful seat. The dragon, pond and wall copings are all made of reconstituted granite which mellows with age.
A fountain or wall mask, as it is sometimes called, can make a strong feature on what may be an otherwise bland wall. This is especially true of a deeply shaded wall, where a face mask or grotesquerie - and the movement of water - will animate an unpromising space like nothing else.
The double headed dragon was designed by Fiona Coffey to fill a comparatively large space. In a domestic setting even a small fountain mask can be eye-catching.
